Introduction:

Northeastern CDC was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) in 1979 under the name of Northeastern Education and Development Foundation (NEED), in collaboration with the Watermark Organization in
Camden County, North Carolina. Since its inception, the organization has focused its work on jobs skills development, asset building, business empowerment, and various forms of counseling for low and moderate-income families. More recently, progressive projects such as a Four Star Child Development Center, comprehensive Hispanic Program, and construction of tax credit housing have helped propel NCDC to its status as a community leader. During its 24 years of services to the community, NCDC has effectively implemented a variety of quality programs for the disadvantaged members of Northeastern North Carolina by consistently remaining in touch with its roots in Camden County and the surrounding areas.

In August 2000, the Board of Directors hired Maria Garcia as Executive Director in order to stabilize the organization. She inherited an organization in transition and has moved it forward in an efficient and successful manner. Many of the issues challenging the organization when she took the helm have been resolved or are being actively addressed today including rebuilding the Homeownership Counseling Program, stabilizing expenditures, implementing a much needed Hispanic Program, providing affordable housing, and constructing a Child Development Center. With the support and guidance of the Board of Directors, she has expanded the staff and kept NCDC moving forward and on track in pursuit of its mission. Ms. Garcia and the Board of Directors recognize that the process of growing as a nonprofit CDC is never ending and involves constant review, feedback, evaluation, and change as an organization
